ELEVEN-year-old Jessica Stancombe was crowned Somersham’s carnival princess on Sunday night with Carla Rea, aged 10 and Ella Hudson, aged nine, given the roles of attendants.

The three girls were chosen in a competition open to all Year 5 and 6 girls living in Somersham and Pidley – their next official duty will be to lead the carnival procession on the Princess Float on Saturday (June 22).

The carnival, which leaves the Trundle at 12.15pm, will parade down Feoffees Road, the High Street and Parkhall Road to the main carnival day event on the Norwood Playing Fields at Victory Hall.

This year the parade, which has the theme ‘Beside the Seaside’, will include floats and walkers, classic cars, bikes and tractors while on the playing field there will be fairground rides, inflatables, food and a wide range of stalls run by local groups, crafts and charities.

There will also be live music all afternoon as well as the Seaside Rock event in the Victory Hall from 7.30pm.

On Sunday a family cycle ride begins at Victory Hall at 10.45am while there’s a five-a-side football tournament for Years 3-8 at Norwood Playing Fields from 2pm and a senior pool competition (16 and over) at the Centurian Club from 2.30pm.
