Soldiers relocating to RAF Wyton from Berkshire took the energetic route to their new base ... running the 120 miles between the two locations.

Holding their regimental flags, 18 servicemen of the 42 Engineering Regiment (Geographic) organised a relay over 24 hours and arrived in Huntingdon at about 12.30pm last Thursday (July 10).

The regiment had been based in Hermitage, Berkshire, but has now been relocated to RAF Wyton as part of the transformation of the site into a joint armed services defence intelligence hub.

Sergeant Major William Robinson said: “This run is a huge undertaking that reflects the selfless commitment that has gone into making this move possible.”

The runners, dressed in regimental shirts, paraded three flags around Huntingdon ring road before making their way to Wyton on the Hill.

The 120-mile journey also raised money for Cancer Research UK after a member of the regiment died from the disease.

The group was congratulated by Brigadier Nick Davies, commander of the Joint Forces Intelligence Group, as they finished the journey at RAF Wyton, raising the three flags.

The arrival of the new regiment is the final stage of transforming RAF Wyton into a defence intelligence hub. More than £300million has been invested in the project, providing new buildings and allowing defence intelligence forces to work together on one site.

Air Marshal Chris Nickols, chief of defence intelligence, said the move would provide a significant improvement in processing and producing intelligence.

He added it will also bring intelligence assets into the 21st century, enabling them to better communicate and co-operate with allies.

About 350 army personnel will take up residence at RAF Wyton. The regiment’s arrival last week marks the largest intake of army personnel at the air base since it first opened in 1916.

Lieutenant Colonel Richard Blunt, commanding officer, said the move to Huntingdonshire represented a huge opportunity for the regiment which provides mapping and terrain analysis.

The regiment’s current role includes support for Operation Herrick in Afghanistan.
