Cambridgeshire police confirmed that 1,112 days were lost to due to stress between April 2009 and March this year.

Cambridgeshire police said officers were exposed to distressing scenes and sensitive investigations during the course of their duties, which took a physical, emotional and mental toll.

A police spokesman said: “The force has an occupational health unit which offers a wide range of health services, including counselling to support officers suffering from stress, post traumatic stress and anxiety – helping them return to work as quickly as possible without compromising their physical or mental health.”

She added: “When officers are off sick we can constantly review the situation and intervene if necessary.”
