A business woman from Bluntisham has embarked on a gruelling 900-mile cycle ride to raise money for Breast Cancer Care.

Shellie Harris, a director at CeJ Cleaning Ltd, decided to take on the challenge as a tribute to her “amazing mum” who underwent treatment for the disease in 2015.

Shellie, of Wheatley Crescent, plans to cycle 100 miles each day, starting off at the charity’s headquarters, in Glasgow, and finishing at the Woodlands

Centre at Hinchingbrooke Hospital, where her mum, Angie Guy, received her treatment.

Shellie, who runs the construction and cleaning company with her husband Colin, launched her fundraising campaign, called BUMS4BOOBS, last year and was hopeful that people would support her along the way.

Shellie said: “I was given a teddy to take on my journey and we named him Ryder. My mum also bought herself a new bike and cycled the last 20 miles each day with me, which was amazing.”

In July 2015, Angie, who was then aged 62, was diagnosed with breast cancer after discovering a “walnut sized lump” and endured months of chemotherapy treatment and underwent a mastectomy.

“It felt that we would never be able to get through what lay ahead and I worried how mum would cope with the months of treatment and the inevitable surgery,” explained Shellie.

“But from day one she was so strong and said that cancer would not defeat her and she would get through anything that was thrown at her. She did became frail and withdrawn during the chemo and on some days even talking became an effort, but she got through it and is an inspiration.”

Shellie, who takes part in cycling and triathlon events, was joined during the course of the event by her mum, dad Terry and daughter Charli, who all travelled with her in a support car, which was provided by Vindis, in St Ives.

Shellie set out on July 29 and returned to the Woodlands on Sunday.
