ALCONBURY Airfield will be opened up to allow people to discover its past, have their say on its future ... and even survey the site from a giant Ferris wheel.

The Family Discovery and Design Day on September 24 will outline owners Urban and Civic’s plans for the airfield, with free buses shuttling visitors from Huntingdon town centre.

A big wheel will be put up, allowing visitors to see for a six-mile radius over the 1,400-acre site.

Last month, a part of the site was selected as a Government-backed Enterprise Zone, bringing the prospect of 8,000 jobs over the next 25 years.

Robin Butler, managing director of Urban and Civic, said: “The event is a chance for people to come and talk to us, find out more and have their say.

“We are very conscious there is 11 miles of perimeter fencing keeping people out of the site.

“We want to bring them in, talk about our plans, listen to people’s views, concerns and aspirations, so that we can then develop a masterplan for the site that is right for the site and the local area.”

Urban and Civic has been working with partners locally and regionally since it bought the airfield site for 27.5million nearly two years ago.

Mr Butler said: “We want as many people as possible to come and find out more.”

There will also be a bouncy castle, hog roast, ice creams, other entertainment and free parking.
