A bike festival which will raise money for Hinchingbrooke Hospital’s Macmillan Woodlands Centre Appeal will be even “bigger and better” this year.

Organisers of the second Bromswold Bike Fest on June 13 are hoping to double the number of cyclists to 400 and have set themselves an £8,000 fundraising target.

“But you don’t have to be a Lycra-clad racing cyclist to enjoy Bike Fest,” said Carol Greed, who is one of the organisers. “You don’t even have to come with a bike.

“There’s entertainment for non-cyclists, from 1pm, with 1940s’ music from Huntingdon Music School’s Big Band, jive dancing and a mini-fete with stalls and games, barbecue food, real ale, Pimm’s tent, tea and cakes. And if you want to cycle, there are routes to suit families and every level of fitness and cycling ability.

“It’s a cycling festival, not a race, so come along and explore the countryside in the company of other cyclists, and raise money for charity at the same time.”

The event was launched last year in memory of long-standing Leighton Bromswold resident Mick Kinaszczuk who died, aged 54. His friends were determined he wouldn’t be forgotten – and Bromswold Bike Fest was born. “Three keen cyclists in the village asked me if we could remember Mick by raising money for the Macmillan Woodlands Centre Appeal, by organising a bike event,” said Mick’s widow Mary. “Of course, I said yes, and of course I got roped in to help.”

Last year’s event raised £4,600 for charity and this year the money will be channelled into the £1.2million appeal for the Woodlands Centre, which will bring together all the outpatient oncology services.
