Rugby clash to raise money for Help for Heroes

HUNTINGDON Stags will take on RAF Brampton Eagles in a rugby match to raise money for Help for Heroes.

HUNTINGDON Stags will take on RAF Brampton Eagles in a rugby match to raise money for Help for Heroes.

The match will take place at the Stags’ Huntingdon Racecourse ground on Sunday, January 23, with all proceeds from the event going to the charity which helps military personnel wounded in action.

The clubs have set a target of 1,000 for the day, when there will be change buckets, a club raffle and H4H merchandise available.

Stags chair John Doonan said the club were pleased to have organised the event, after poor weather thwarted last year’s plans.

“It’s something I have wanted to arrange for a long time. We chose Help 4 Heroes as there is a strong association between rugby and the charity, plus the fact that Huntingdon has a long history associated with the RAF, being surrounded by so many bases.

“At the Stags we have had a couple of players posted to Afghanistan and by hosting the fundraising event we felt that it would not only raise some money but also remind parents and players of all ages as to the ongoing campaign in Afghanistan and the commitment of our Armed Forces personnel.

He added: “When we approached the Brampton Eagles they thought it was a good idea and we decided to get the ball rolling.

“It would be great if it could become an annual event in the future.”

There will be no charge for entry to the match on the day, but the crowd will be encouraged to donate to the charity, helping the teams to reach their four-figure target.

Mr Doonan and Patrick Goldsworthy of the Stags were joined on Saturday at the launch of the fundraiser by Terry Downing, Huntingdonshire fundraising coordinator for the charity.

Corporal James Reid, captain of the Brampton Eagles, said: “It’s great that the Stags have invited us to play in this match. Help for Heroes is very close to our hearts and the rugby community have been fantastic in supporting the cause.

“Over the past few years we have taken part in a number of similar events, and we are delighted to be asked to participate.

“We hope that the Huntingdon community will also support this event by attending, and I look forward to a very competitive game for a very worthwhile cause.”
