FOUR years of hard work by staff and pupils at St Peter’s School in Huntingdon have been brought to the attention of The Queen.

Headteacher Val Ford (pictured above) was yesterday (Tuesday) at The Queen’s Garden Party at Buckingham Palace.

She was invited on the recommendation of Hugh Duberley, Lord Lieutenant of Cambridgeshire, in recognition of the improvements made in the past four years that Mrs Ford has been head at St Peter’s.

The chairman of the school governors, Mick Taylor, founder and head coach at Campol – the Police Boxing Club based in Huntingdon, has also been invited to the palace for a second garden party on July 22.

St Peter’s is now included on a national list of the most improved schools.

GCSE results at the school are now 66 per cent A to C and 43 per cent A* to C, including English and maths. These figures are up from 44 per cent and 25 per cent respectively.

This year the school expects the A to C figure to be 70 per cent.

Mrs Ford told The Hunts Post: “I feel very privileged to be invited to Buckingham Palace and to represent the fantastic team of staff at St Peter’s School who have all worked so hard over the past four years to achieve our success.

“The students have responded to our drive for improvement beyond our expectations and they are an amazing group of young people. I am just so proud of our school.”

Mrs Ford said she was planning to attend the garden party with her husband, Gerard Roberts, head of Cromwell Community College in Fenland.

Mr Taylor said he will be accompanied by his wife Christine and daughter, Sophie.

He added: “I thought ‘what have I done to deserve this?’ I feel quite honoured. I do what I do for fun and for the youngsters out there. I just love doing what I do.”
