A driver who was scarred for life in a road rage assault said his attacker “had the look of death” in his eyes as he hit him in the face.

Philip Wetherilt, 67, was left with severe facial injuries in the attack following a minor collision at Pondersbridge, near Ramsey.

His glasses and false teeth were smashed in the incident which caused a wound to his forehead and a scar running down the side of his nose.

Mr Wetherilt is now recovering from his roadside ordeal and has just had his stitches out.

He told the Hunts Post: “I am waiting to hear from the doctor because I have just found another stitch which they missed and he will tell me where I can go and get it taken out.”

Mr Wetherilt said there had been a mirror to mirror collision with another vehicle as he drove his Ford Transit along Ramsey Road in icy conditions on March 2.

“I saw his brake lights come on as he stopped and came over. He had the look of death in his eyes.”

Mr Wetherilt was pulled from his cab by the driver of the silver pick-up truck who hit him in the face several times before driving off again.

His victim suffered serious facial injuries which required hospital treatment.

Mr Wetherilt, from Whittlesey, said: “I don’t feel too bad now.

“I have got a prescription for new glasses because they were smashed when it happened and my false teeth were broken in half and have been superglued back together, but I need to get it all sorted out before I go on holiday.”

He said: “The scar is something I am always going to have.”

Mr Wetherilt said: “I was going home. I have been a lorry driver for 50 years and I am used to driving in adverse weather conditions. OK, the collision could easily have been my fault, it must have been his wing mirror to my wing mirror.”

Police said the incident happened at 10.40pm on Friday, March 2, and described the attacker as being white, with short brown hair.

PC Kellymarie Harman said: “This was an extremely nasty assault that has left the victim with serious injuries and in a lot of pain.

“We would urge anyone with any information about this incident or who thinks they know the driver of the truck to contact us.”
