REVISED plans for a bigger supermarket building and additional flats for Huntingdon’s west of town centre site have been approved by councillors.

Sainsbury’s already had planning permission for a new superstore and nine retail units, two offices and 13 flats and maisonettes.

However under the new plans an additional 15 flats will be added on the land between George Street and St John’s Street, while the height of the main supermarket building will be increased by 1.3m.

That means a number of alterations will be made to the plans for the supermarket building originally approved in 2010, which include redesigning the main lobby entrance and setting the first floor of the building further back.

However vehicle access to the site and the location of the petrol station remain the same, as does the number of parking spaces for shoppers, which will be 467.

Planning documents submitted to Huntingdonshire District Council ahead of Monday’s (January 21) development management panel said the increase in the number of homes on the site was to improve the “deliverability of this part of the scheme”.

It means there will be 11 one-bedroom flats, 13 two-bedroom flats and four two-bedroom maisonettes, although there will still be 13 car parking spaces for residents and visitors.
