TODAY (Monday) you can start planning where to watch the Olympic torch relay as the official route through Cambridgeshire is revealed.

The flame will pass through St Ives and Huntingdon on Sunday, July 8, after stopping overnight in Cambridge where part of its journey will be completed on a punt.

And Cambridge will provide the first opportunity to see the flame procession on that weekend as it enters the city on the evening of Saturday, July 7, at about 6pm.

The runners chosen to carry the flame will enter the city via Newmarket Road, Barnwell Road, Brooks Road, and Mill Road before stopping at an evening event at Parkers Piece at 6.30pm.

The relay leaves Cambridge at 6.30am on Sunday from Trinity College and will be taken by punt along the River Cam and then along Castle Street and Huntingdon Road before it joins the Olympic Torch Convoy – the supporting vehicles – to head to St Ives.

The runners will pick up the flame again at 7.50am and will take it along Meadow Lane, Cromwell Place, Market Hill, The Pavement, The Broadway, The Waits, Ramsey Road and onto A1123 Houghton Road.

The Torch will then travel to Huntingdon, arriving at about 8.18am, and will be taken through the town via Main Street, Desborough Road, Mayfield Road, Hartford Road, Riverside Road, High Street, George Street then finally onto Brampton Road.

The next stop is then Bedford.

Over the next few weeks, local authorities and the police will be working with communities and businesses on the route to explain the impact of rolling road blocks and any temporary road closures.

An average of 115 torchbearers a day will carry the Olympic flame during its 8,000-mile journey around the UK before it arrives at the Olympic Stadium on July 27.

Councillor Jason Ablewhite, executive leader of Huntingdonshire District Council, said: “We are extremely pleased to be welcoming the Olympic Torch through St Ives and Huntingdon. Now that the exact street route has been announced we hope that Huntingdonshire residents will line the streets and support the torchbearers as they carry the torch through our pretty market towns.

“There will also be plenty of local celebration events taking place on the day for people to enjoy.”

Sebastian Coe, chairman of LOCOG added: “Today we bring the Olympic Torch Relay to life. The flame symbolises the Olympic spirit and its journey around the UK will bring the excitement of the Games to our streets. Now the people know the route the Olympic flame will be carried along and the torchbearers for their community, they can start planning how they might celebrate and make it Cambridgeshire’s moment to shine.”
