People thinking of attending the accident and emergency department at Hinchingbrooke Hospital are being asked to consider using other services because of a surge in demand.
People with minor ailments are being urged to use walk-in centres or minor injuries units instead of attending Hinchingbrooke which, as a result of the hot weather, has seen an increase in patients.
Dr Suzanne Hamilton, associate director of medicine at the hospital, said: “We’re asking people to please help us by using other services such as minor injuries units and walk-in centres whenever possible.
“Our emergency department deals with genuine emergencies, including loss of consciousness; acute confused state and fits that are not stopping; persistent, severe chest pain; breathing difficulties; severe bleeding that cannot be stopped; severe allergic reactions; severe burns or scalds; and broken bones.
“Priority is always given to people with the most urgent health needs, which means anyone else will wait longer to be seen by a nurse or doctor. Therefore, we would encourage people with less urgent conditions to call NHS 111, visit a pharmacist, make a GP appointment, or use NHS Choices (www.nhs.uk) for advice about treating yourself. “
