CHILDREN and businesses across Huntingdonshire have helped to raise a record-breaking amount for good causes by joining in with Red Nose Day 2011.

A whopping £168,681 was taken over the phones for Comic Relief by volunteers at Cambridgeshire Direct, a council contact centre.

Volunteers from Cambridgeshire County Council and the centre, as well as councillors, took calls through the evening and night.

Cambridgeshire Direct usually deals with a range of services for the county’s residents and answers around 440,000 calls a year.

More than £74 million was raised on Red Nose Day. Money from the day will be going to help poor and vulnerable people in the UK and Africa.
