Students from Abbey College in Ramsey have been awarded a prize for Best Social Media Strategy in a competition set by the Subway to design and market a new sandwich.

The Abbey team was up against students from five other schools in the region in a head-to-head Dragons Den style pitch at Cambridge University, but were just pipped to the post for the overall winner prize in what proved to be a tight contest. The enterprising team came up with the fresh healthy sub, designed to be both a healthy and nutritious sandwich option, created for the Subway’s low fat range. The team won a share of £500 Amazon vouchers for their efforts.

Almost 100 teams from across the region entered the competition and the entries were whittled down to six finalists: Abbey College, Milton Keynes College, North Hertfordshire College, Norwich High School, Sandon School Sixth Form and Northampton College, who were all asked to present to a judging panel.

Adam May, who chaired the judging panel, said: “All the students did a fantastic job and we were extremely impressed with their pitches and the creativity of their ideas. We have been running the Design a Sub competition in Anglia for seven years now and I am overwhelmed by the enthusiasm and creativity we see from our entrants. The Abbey College team clearly put a lot of thought and hard work into their entry and the judges were most impressed with the social media content of their entry. They should be very proud of how far they got in the competition. Selecting our overall winner was an extremely tough decision.”

Julie McCrory, head of business, IT and economics (BITE) at Abbey College, said: “The students thoroughly enjoyed getting to grips with the Design a Sub competition. It gave them a fantastic opportunity to put the skills they are learning into practice and they all did a great job. Being awarded for Best Social Media Strategy is a brilliant achievement and excellent reward for all their hard work. Taking part in the Design a Sub competition has been a fantastic experience for them and the college is very proud of their efforts.”

The overall competition was won by Norwich High School for Girls .
