A RAMSEY student has been picked as one of five finalists for an international fashion award and will see her clothes modelled on the catwalk.

Janine Clark has been chosen out of hundreds of entrants across the globe to see her clothes at the St Andrews Charity Fashion Show for the 2012 Alfa Romeo Young Designer Award and the chance to design a set of clothes for the show’s chosen charity, The Muir Maxwell Trust, which supports children with severe epilepsy.

The award, now in its second year, offers designers the chance to see their clothes worn by models on the catwalk of the UK’s largest student-run fashion show.

Janine, a fashion design student at Nottingham Trent University, had to pass a rigorous interview process to see her Alfa Romeo-inspired clothes come to life. “It’s crazy, I now have to produce five pieces of clothing in a month but I’m sure it will be a great experience,” she said.

“It’s a great opportunity for me as you never know who will be there. I want to join a high street fashion store on a graduate scheme but I could get scouted at the event.

“I read the competition’s brief and just thought it was something that I could do as it was something different and I like to push and challenge myself but I never thought I’d get this far.”

The 22-year-old, of Hollow Lane, was inspired to re-discover iconic silhouettes from the 1940’s to compliment the trends that are going to be on show in this year’s fashion.

Janine hopes to beat finalists Sean McGirr, Oliver Doherty, Emma Baldwin and Charlotte Stowe to the 1,000 top prize and a photoshoot spread in the Fashion Show (FS) Magazine.

Jennifer Goslett, spokesman for the award, says this year’s crop of designers is the best she has seen. “We were really impressed both with the sheer volume of the applications, as well as the quality of the designers who we interviewed,” she said.

“It is great to see the Alfa Romeo Young Designer Award growing at such a pace and offering support to such talented designers in a very competitive industry.”

The winner’s designs will be shown in St Andrews on February 26.
