RAMSEY’S post sorting office will close on Monday.

The business is being moved to Huntingdon, although Royal Mail insists it will continue to provide a high level of customer service in the town.

The decision was announced last week with the statement that there would be no compulsory redundancies, with all 15 staff from the Whytefield Road site transferring to Huntingdon.

They will also be reimbursed for additional costs of having to work 12 miles away at St Peter’s Road, Huntingdon.

However, customers will not be expected to travel to pick up post that could not be delivered. Royal Mail said

A spokesman said: “Royal Mail makes every effort to deliver mail to customers first time. If this is not possible because they are not at home, we leave a card that outlines the options available to customers. Customers can arrange a re-delivery free of charge or they can arrange for the item to be delivered to a different address within the same postcode area if that is more suitable.”

“Ramsey customers who have been notified that they have an item to collect will also be able to collect these items from Ramsey post office in Whytefield Road. Customers with PO Boxes or surcharges to pay will need to go to Huntingdon delivery office.”

Councillor Peter Reeve said the town council raised concerns when the plan was first mooted about a year ago.

“We invited Royal Maill managers down to explain their proposal and made sure they agreed to have a place in Ramsey for people to collect their undelivered items without having to travel to Huntingdon,” he told The Hunts Post. “We also spoke about complaints we had from its workers, but the managers explained that their trade union had already agreed to the move so we weren’t able to do anything for them unfortunately.”

Royal Mail said the decision to close Ramsey sorting office was made following a nationwide decline in mail volumes.

Duncan Stephenson, collection and delivery sector manager, said: “We must modernise our operations and the relocation of Ramsey is part of this.”
