Ramsey councillor, Lisa Duffy, has come second in the race to become the next leader of UKIP, following a party conference in Bournemouth this afternoon (September 16).

The mother of six received 4,591 votes and was up against winner Diane James, as well as Bill Etheridge, Elizabeth Jones, and Philip Broughton to succeed Nigel Farage.

A post by her Lisa4Leader Twitter account read: “Lisa Duffy would like to thank the thousands of members who voted for her, and would like to congratulate Diane James”.

During her campaign, Ms Duffy made national headlines after saying there should be a ban on Muslim faith schools, Sharia courts, and burkas bring worn in high security places.

Speaking to The Hunts Post earlier this year, she said: “We need to be very tough on radicalisation and there is clear proof out there that Muslim faith schools are a place where it starts.”

After the announcement, Diane James said: “We did it ladies and gentleman. You did it, and I’ve just done it and I am so pleased.

“Chairman, Nigel, conference, thank you for that, it’s going to take me a while to come back to earth.”
