Flying will continue at RAF Wyton until next summer, it has been revealed.

The Ministry of Defence had expected to cease training flights and relocate them to other bases around the country by midway through this year, but the Wyton runway will continue to be used until the end of next summer.

A spokesman for RAF Wyton told The Hunts Post: “The relocation of activities from RAF Wyton to RAF Wittering has involved a number of complex infrastructure requirements and the Defence Infrastructure Organisation (DIO) is working with its partners, including the RAF, to complete the project as quickly as possible.

“The runway at RAF Wyton will remain in use until the necessary infrastructure is ready at Wittering, ensuring there will be no operational impact on the armed forces.

“RAF Wyton flying units scheduled to relocate to RAF Wittering in 2015 include Cambridge University Air Squadron (CUAS), University of London Air Squadron (ULAS) and Number 5 Air Experience Flight (No 5 AEF). The 57 (Reserve) Squadron (57(R) Sqn) is scheduled to relocate to RAF Cranwell in Lincolnshire by the end of August 2014.”

Continued flights from the airfield, however, will not hold back plans to build homes on the land where more than 3,750 new homes are expected.

A delivery manager will be appointed at the end of this year with the aim of seeking planning permission for redevelopment.

A Spitfire (pictured) which could be seen circling over RAF Wyton last Thursday evening was definitely not part of the training flights (although we expect many pilots really wish it was).

The plane had flown to Huntingdonshire from Duxford for a flyover as RAF Wyton hosted an annual event, updating people in the community about plans for the base, which include turning it into a intelligence hub with personnel from all three armed forces.
