PRODUCTION stopped at Dairy Crest’s Fenstanton site yesterday (Tuesday).

It was announced that the site was to close last year.

Seventy-three people were kept on over the Christmas period to help meet seasonal demand but milk processing activities at the site have now ceased.

Production crews will finish on Friday with “clean down” staff due to finish on January 25.

A spokesman for Dairy Crest said: “In April last year, we took the extremely difficult decision to enter into consultation with the 248 employees at our dairy in Fenstanton, with the view to closing down production at the site.

“This decision was not taken lightly, but we believe that the restructuring of our dairies business is the right decision for the long-term future of Dairy Crest and will allow us to reinvest in our other sites.

“We expect to see a phased reduction of cold store and transport activity at Fenstanton up until the end of March 2013.”

The site has recently been advertised for sale and the company is inviting offers.

The spokesman said no decisions on the site had been taken but bosses will continue to work closely on its future with the council.
