The villages existing branch, in High Street, will close and relocate to a refurbished premises at Spar Stores, in Mill Green which, the Post Office says, will allow for extended opening hours. Services will be provided from three counters one open-plan, one full-screened and an open-plan counter alongside the retail counter. The two main counters will be open Monday to Saturday, 9am-5.30pm, and the one alongside the retail counter will offer selected services from Monday to Saturday, from 7am-10pm; and 8am-10pm on Sunday. According to the Post Office, this will allow for an extra 58 hours a week of service. The current branch at 30 High Street, will close on May 20 at 5.30pm and the new branch will open on June 1 at 1pm. During the transfer alternative branches include Ramsey post office, and Somersham post office. Suzanne Richardson, regional network manager for the Post Office, said: We are making it easier for customers to get their cash, send and collect their mail and do their banking because we know how important these services are to local residents. We are confident that this vibrant new-style post office at the heart of the local community will meet customer needs. This modernisation is part of a major investment programme, the largest in the history of the post office and will secure services for the future. The Post Office said that, during a consultation on the plans to move the branch, some residents had complained at the extra travel distance and time resulting from the move, but a spokesman said access to the new branch had been assessed and was satisfactory. The spokesman said: With any relocation a new branch will be closer to some and further away for others. In terms of access to the new location, there are well maintained pavements and dropped kerbs along the route for customers choosing to walk to the new branch. For those using public transport, there is a direct bus service with bus stops in close vicinity of both sites. We are therefore satisfied that the new branch will continue to meet customer requirements.
