POLICE name man who died on Saturday evening after his car left a road at Earith and plunged into a river.

Graham Gillson died after his silver Nissan Note left the A1123 at around 4.50pm and ended in the river.

The 70-year-old, from Cranfield Place, Somersham, was pulled out of the car by a member of the public, who started CPR.

Emergency medical charity Magpas said its medics were called to the A1123 at 5pm following an accident in which a car had left the road and ended up in the river.

A spokesman said: “We were called out to treat a man after the car he was in, left the road and went into a nearby river.

“The man had been pulled from the water by a member of the public who had already started CPR prior to the Helimedix arriving on scene. The Helimedix stepped in to provide advanced life support. Sadly, despite all their best efforts, the man was pronounced dead on the way to the hospital. Our thoughts are with his family and friends at this time.”

Cambridgeshire police said the death was not related to the wet and windy weather.

“This particular accident could have happened at any time of year,” a force spokesman said.

Officers are appealing for witnesses who saw the car before the incident.
