AN INTRUDER posing as a police officer stole cash and jewellery from an elderly woman in a distraction burglary in Godmanchester.

The woman, who is in her 90s, was alerted to the burglary by the sound of glass being smashed at her home in Almond Close, at about 9.30pm last Wednesday (June 1), and went to investigate.

She found a man who told her he was a police officer and that he had arrived at the property with other officers to investigate a break-in and take fingerprints from the scene.

He led the woman to the living room and told her to wait there, but did not return. The woman noticed the man had left and that cash, jewellery and a bank card had been stolen.

Police said the woman had been left shaken and upset by the incident, and released a description of the man.

He is described as white, in his 20s, around six feet tall and wearing a neutral-coloured flat cap.

Pc James Bowen, investigating, said: "This is a despicable crime which has left an elderly woman extremely distressed and I would urge anyone with information about those responsible to contact me.

"I would also like to hear from anyone who saw three men hanging around the area prior to the burglary."
