Police are appealing for information after an elderly man’s home in Bradshaw Close was broken into by men claiming to be from a gas company.

The victim, an 81-year-old man, heard a knock at the door at about 8pm yesterday evening (Monday, October 26). On opening it he was greeted by three young men claiming to be from a gas company.

One man, described as wearing a dark scruffy coat, black glasses and gloves, told the victim he needed access to turn off his gas supply.

When asked for ID, the men barged their way inside, knocking the elderly man to the ground.

Two of the men went upstairs and ransacked the bedrooms, while the man in the scruffy coat escorted the victim into the kitchen.

The victim describes him as being white, 17 to 18-years-old, medium build, average height, clean shaven and spoke with a local accent.

The elderly man engaged the offender in conversation and during this time noticed he was holding a knife. During this conversation, the young man told the victim he was homeless.

Detective Constable Ben Devonshire said: “This was a very traumatic experience for the elderly man by three men who had no hesitation to use force in order to facilitate their entry.

“Fortunately no one was seriously injured and nothing was stolen, however the victim has been left very shaken.

“I am appealing to anyone who may have information about the identity and whereabouts of those involved in this crime.”
