Bluntisham Parish Council is calling on all shoppers to lend their support as they vie for thousands of pounds in grant funding.

The parish council is one of three causes selected from across East Anglia that are in with a chance of receiving up to £12,000 as part of retailer Tesco's Bags of Help initiative.

Shoppers across the region will be asked to vote with tokens for which cause they would like to receive the top grant of £12,000, with other grants of £10,000 and £8,000 also available.

The parish council has set its sights on building a new outdoor gym at the recreation ground, in Mill Lane, and is hoping to land the top prize to allow them to purchase as much equipment as possible.

The council will also top-up the grant funding with cash from its budget.

Parish clerk, Tracey Davidson, said: "We have carried out consultation with the village on the proposed gym and have also consulted with the authorities with regards to having the relevant permissions in place.

"The gym will be free to be used by everyone in the village, accessible 365 days a year to all ages and abilities and we hope to have a minimum of five pieces of equipment ready for use by summer.

"So the village needs people to back the bid and help make Bluntisham top banana in the public vote."

Voting is set to start on Saturday, and runs until Sunday, March 6.
