Eddie McGuire, 77, decided he wanted to raise money to help those fighting cancer after his wife Evelyn spent time in hospital fighting a brain tumour two years ago.

He held a charity golf day last year at Abbotsley Golf Club which raised almost £1,500 for Children with Cancer UK, and plans to hold the same event later this month.

Since retiring as a painter/decorator a year ago, Mr McGuire has taken up oil painting and amassed a large collection which he is selling at St Neots Emporium, Fishers Yard, for the benefit of the charity.

Mr McGuire, of Raven Close, said: "I was visiting my wife at Addenbrooke's where she had been for quite a while and when I got home there was a flyer through the door for Children with Cancer UK. I had never seen it before and I thought I would go for it."

Mrs McGuire, who at one stage could not walk, is now in remission and almost fully recovered
but her husband is continuing to raise money for charity.

"Since I retired, oil painting has been my hobby and I thought, rather than having all my paintings in my garage, I had better display them," he added.

"They're now on sale in St Neots Emporium and all the money made from their sale will go to Children with Cancer UK.

"I like to paint things that are challenging - portraits, ships, horizons and sunsets. I've said to the shop to sell them for whatever people are willing to pay."

As well as selling the paintings, Mr McGuire will be holding a second charity golf event at the Cromwell Course at Abbotsley Golf Club on August 17. Last year 44 golfers took part, raising £1,450.

It costs £40 (£20 for members) to take part which includes coffee and breakfast, 18 holes, refreshments, cakes, a meal and a presentation at the end of the day.

Children with Cancer UK aims to determine the causes, find cures and provide care for children with cancer.
