The 62-tree site has been fenced for the past two years to allow the saplings, many of them local varieties of fruit trees, a chance to grow. On Sunday, visitors were allowed to wander under the bowers for the first time and even got a chance to help make juice from the first harvest with an apple press. Among the varieties of fruit trees planted at the site are apples, plums, pears, gages, damsons and nuts. The fruit will be used in the park café although visitors will be allowed to pick some of their own in moderation. Plans are to use the orchard as an educational resource for local schools.
