ENGLAND Women’s cricket captain Charlotte Edwards had an afternoon to remember for all the wrong reasons at Dame Norma Major’s annual charity cricket match.

Appearing for Dame Norma’s Invitational XI captained by James Major, Edwards was left to count the cost after her car windscreen was on the receiving end of a booming six from MCC chief executive Keith Bradshaw.

It was the 20th staging of the charity cricket match, which raised more than 3,000 for the work of Mencap in Huntingdon. Stars at this year’s event included Peterborough United manager Gary Johnson, former manager Barry Fry and England goalkeeper Joe Lewis.

The Bunbury team captained by former Bee Gees manager David English CBE won by 52 runs, watched by a crowd of more than 300 people.

Organiser Laurence Rickard said the event could not have gone better. “It was a pretty perfect day – it’s one of the only matches in recent years in which it hasn’t rained at all. We’re happy to have raised so much money, especially in the current economic climate.”

The money raised goes towards the work of Mencap in Huntingdon, helping people with learning disabilities to lead full lives. Projects funded in part by the cricket match include sheltered accommodation, community groups and transport for people in Huntingdon.

Dame Norma thanked everyone who had helped to make the day a success. “It would not happen without the hard work and dedication of everyone involved. Even the smallest contributions make a difference, so thanks must go to everyone who made it such a wonderful day once again.”
