DOUBLE gold medal winning Olympian Daley Thompson will be visiting Huntingdon Gym on Saturday morning (August 18) as the London 2012 legecy ‘Battle Bus’ rolls into town.

Decathlete Thompson won his gold medals at the Olympic Games in Moscow in 1980 and Los Angeles four years later. He was a regular guest on the BBC during the London 2012 Olympics where Huntingdon Gym’s pommel horse specialist Louis Smith won a team bronze and an individual silver. Sam Oldham, who is also a member of Huntingdon Gym under coach Paul Hall, also won a team bronze.

Thompson, 54, became a national sporting hero when he won his first gold in the Soviet Union in 1980. His 1984 British decathlon record of 8,847 points still stands. He was an inspiration to many sportsmen and women, including heptathete Jessica Ennis who won gold in London.

The ‘Join In Local Sport’ project’s Battle Bus while be touring the country over the weekend, visiting sporting communities in Scotland, the North, the Midlands, Wales and the South East and West.

Lord Sebastian Coe, chair of London 2012, said: “Millions will have been inspired by what they have witnessed over the summer and I hope this creates opportunities in every community for people to join in their local sports clubs.

“We are really happy to support the ‘Join In’ project, it is a great idea that means that thousands of people across the UK can turn up and take part in local sports just after the Olympic Games finishes.”

Thompson and coaches from the gym will be holding introductory classes for parents and toddlers of all abilities to inspire children to try something new.

The bus, with Thompson on board, will arrive at Huntingdon Gym at 11am.
