Officers are hunting an arsonist who set a straw stack on fire near Huntingdon earlier this week.

At 1am on Monday (September 1), more than 350 bales were set alight in a field close to Wennington Woods.

Firefighters from Huntingdon worked with the farmer and dampened the surrounding area to let the 15m-tall stack burn in a controlled manner.

The cause of fire is believed to be deliberate.

Watch commander Trevor Lindsay said: “In fewer than 12 hours, we attended two stack fires that were started deliberately.

“Stack fires can be extremely dangerous and result in a loss not only to the farmer who loses stock, but also to the fire service as our resources are tied up. Stack fires can be difficult to extinguish quickly and can burn for many days and this can have a significant impact of fire service resource, and in turn, on the local community.

“Therefore, we're urging local residents to stay vigilant and report any suspicious activity to the police.”
