WORK to extend the cycleway between Wyton and Hartford is set to start on Monday next week.

The new 250,000 cycleway will run along the south (river) side of the A1123 from Hartford Marina to 150 metres east of the garden centre.

The path will have a tarmac finish, mainly 2.5 metres wide and shared by pedestrians and cyclists. There will also be two new pedestrian crossing areas over the A1123 with central refuges.

A new 1.5 metre wide footway will also be constructed near the turn into Wyton to provide safer access for pedestrians.

Cambridgeshire County Council says work is expected to take up to seven weeks with off-peak manually operated traffic controls, Monday to Friday between 9.30 am and 3.30 pm, to minimise disruption.

Councillor Ian Bates, cabinet member for growth and planning and local county councillor for Houghton and Wyton, said: “This new section of cycleway will help create a much-needed cycle link between Huntingdon and St Ives, which will encourage more people to get out by foot or bike.

“We’ve been working with the local parish and district councils to get this new path, and I’m looking forward to seeing it used. Cycling is an affordable and enjoyable way to keep active while helping to reduce congestion and improve air quality.”
