Morrisons still doesn’t have a start date for its St Ives supermarket.

The chain was granted planning permission to build a supermarket and fuel station between Needingworth Road and Harrison Way, next to the Marsh Harrier pub, last summer.

Originally, the new Morrisons store was meant to be underway by now, ready to be complete by mid 2015. But since 2013, when its plans were revealed, the supermarket chain has fallen on worsening times.

Last month, it announced it was to close 10 loss-making stores, and there have been no signs of things to come at the proposed site.

A Morrisons spokesman told The Hunts Post: “We are still working on the details for this store and therefore unable to provide information on timescales at this point.

“We would like to thank the community for their patience and will provide an update as soon as possible.”

But similar noises were made by Sainsbury’s when discussing a new store in Huntingdon at Edison Bell Way before it wasn’t included on its building programme.

Morrisons was keen on St Ives after a survey showed 40 per cent of the town’s residents travelled to other areas to do their shopping.

More than 600 people visited the Morrisons exhibition where the plans for the 2,882sq m store with 400-space car park were revealed, with 90 per cent in favour.

The store, which would have been built on stilts, would have created about 250 jobs.
