Brian Luter said he was “exuberant” after being named as the new Mayor of St Ives.

Cllr Luter, who has been a St Ives town councillor since 1996, said he would use his year to help promote a scheme to enhance tourism in the town and believes the area’s heritage and riverside are key factors in bringing more people to St Ives.

He told The Hunts Post: “We can’t change the name of the town, but we would like it to become known as the Old Riverport of St Ives. St Ives is full of heritage with lots of historic buildings and a beautiful riverside, which should all be promoted in order to bring people into the town.”

Cllr Luter, who retired from the RAF in 1993, named his wife Paula as his mayoress. His chosen charities for the next 12 months are the Royal British Legion and Blind Veterans UK. He will also support several local charities and not-for-profit organisations and intends to name these at a later date.

Cllr Luter takes over from Nick Dibben who, during his mayoral year, raised money for The Papworth Trust, Upside Down Club and Tenterleas Community Garden.
