Ramsey Town Council has appointed a new mayor.

Councillor Doug McIlwain took on the post of mayor following a unanimous vote at a town council meeting on Thursday, and he has vowed to put the town back on the map.

He said: “I want to promote Ramsey more than it ever has been. Ramsey has been the back water of the district but I want to showcase that it is a thriving market town.”

As a part of his role, Cllr McIlwain will be hoping to get out and about in the community to help promote organisations.

At Thursday’s town council meeting, Councillor Adela Costello was voted deputy mayor, after standing as mayor last year.

Cllr McIlwain said: “[Councillor Costello and I] worked well together last year and I believe it is important to keep continuity, and Adela is well known throughout Ramsey.”

Cllr McIlwain has chosen Ramsey Town Football Club as his charity for the year.
