Youth leader, Nancy Kyle, proved her boots were made for walking when she completed 35 miles in one day to raise funds for the club she has run for the past two years.

At 8am on Saturday, March 28, the 58 year old set off from Gransden Village Hall in Little Gransden, where The Zone Youth Club is based, and was waved off by supporters.

She then trekked through Waresley, Tetworth, Abbotsley, Eltisley, Caxton, Cambourne, Hardwick and Comberton.

The sponsored walk took her 10 hours and she arrived back at the village hall at 8pm.

She said: “I met lots of lovely people on the walk who were interested in the youth club.

“There were friends to meet me every two or three miles, which was great.

“I finished in a quicker time than I thought, because I reckoned it would take 12 hours.”

Nancy revived the club after it had been closed for 10 years. She explained: “I have a nephew, Richie and I wondered what he was going to do and where he was going to go when he got to seven or eight.

“So I re-opened the club with help from volunteers and some teenagers who are working for their Duke of Edinburgh Award.”

The club, which meets on Friday evenings, offers activities including pool, table tennis and badminton. There’s also arts and crafts, film nights and cooking. It is open to youngsters in school years 3 to 9 and there are two sessions, younger ones then the older ones.

Nancy, a teaching assistant, who coaches sport at Barnabus Oley School, is trying to raise cash for a skittle lane for the club. She said: “I didn’t think I would be able to raise enough money for that all in one go but people went out with buckets and I have had some very generous sponsors. And the children deserve a skittle lane.”

Nancy’s fundraising total is more than £500, with more to be added from collection boxes around the villages.
