A police crackdown on anti-social driving in St Neots has resulted in more than 30 motorists being caught – four could have their cars crushed if they continue.

Cambridgeshire police said that in September, 36 motorists were been penalised – 24 for speeding, including four issued with a Section 59 warning which could lead to their vehicles being confiscated or destroyed. One vehicle was seized.

There has been growing concern from residents about nuisance drivers in the Riverside car park area, so police and Huntingdonshire District Council put up posters warning cars could be destroyed.

The problem was solved when rising bollards where installed at the car park entrance in 2006. However, they were damaged in 2008 and have not worked since.

At a meeting of Huntingdonshire District Council last Wednesday, Councillor Derek Giles asked HDC if it planned to fix them.

Cllr Darren Marcus Tysoe said: “I will explore the options and their cost-effectiveness and make a decision on that basis. However, I am confident that by working closely with the police, and increased use of Section 59 warnings and other enforcement measures, we will find solutions.”

Following the meeting, Cllr Giles said: “The police are being very proactive – let’s hope it goes some way to solving the problem.”
