A month-long cycling festival is aiming to get more people on their bikes in Huntingdonshire.

To capitalise on Tour de France fever, which will pass through Cambridgeshire on July 7, Huntingdonshire District Council, along with the area’s cycling clubs, has arranged a series of events throughout June to give people of all ages and abilities the chance to get back on their bikes and enjoy cycling.

The month kicks-off on June 1 at Ramsey Rural Museum with a visit from Peterborough Vintage Cycling Club’s annual rally, featuring bikes manufactured before 1930.

A cycling festival at Hinchingbrooke Country Park – on Sunday, June 15 – forms one of the month’s showpiece events with a day dedicated to cycling, including rides, displays, training and bike maintenance advice.

The evening before – on the Saturday – St Ives is hosting a night race in the town centre when elite riders from all over the country can take on a circuit course.

And the month will culminate with The Hunts Post’s Two Wheels for Woodlands charity bike ride from Alconbury Weald on June 29 – including the challenging 100-mile ride around Huntingdonshire.

There will also be a chance for primary and secondary schools to compete against each other as HDC will be running Two Wheels on Wednesdays, where pupils will be encouraged to cycle to school on Wednesdays throughout June.

Schools will be asked to submit the number of pupils taking part and the council will produce three league tables – one each for small primary, large primary and secondary schools. The winning schools will get a prize at the end of the month.

St Neots Cycling Club will be holding weekly rides on Sundays and there will also be weekly sessions for disabled people and families at Hinchingbrooke Country Park.

Time trial events will be hosted by St Ives Cycling Club on June 4 and Peterborough Cycling Club on June 14.

Heidi Field, environmental education and promotion officer at HDC, said: “There are many ways in which everyone can embrace cycling this summer and the Huntingdonshire Cycling Festival really highlights all those rides and events that are taking place in our district. We want to encourage everyone to dust off their bikes and join us in celebrating cycling in Huntingdonshire.”
