More than 100 people turned out for a memorial cricket match on Sunday (June 5) to celebrate the life of local cricketing legend Andre Goodison.

Mr Goodison, aged 58, who was originally from Cape Town in South Africa, died on May 8 following a three-year battle with cancer after being diagnosed with a brain tumour.

The match, between two of Mr Goodison’s former clubs, Abbots Ripton and Upwood, raised £1,000, which will be divided between the Sue Ryder and Chance to Shine charities and will also fund the cost of a trophy to remember Mr Goodison’s sporting achievements.

“It was a brilliant day and the weather was fantastic,” said Mr Goodison’s son Kevin who played for Abbots Ripton in the match which saw 300 runs being scored.

“We are going to buy a trophy and call it the Andre Goodison Cup, which will be awarded for bowling achievement.”

Adding: “He was a very well respected cricketer, who in his youth, played with some of the greatest international South African players, including Gary Kirsten and Alan Donald. Locally, his greatest achievement was a double hat-trick against Ramsey when he was playing for Hemingford.”

Jerry Hyde from Abbots Ripton Cricket Club added his tribute: “He was probably our greatest bowler, and his bowling average of 5.2 in 2001 is unlikely ever to be beaten.”

Most of those taking part on Sunday were retired players who had played alongside Mr Goodison.
