Fire crews from Huntingdon, Sawtry and Stanground were called to the accident, which happened at 8.30am on the A1 southbound between Sawtry and Alconbury. The crash involved two small lorries, a van and a car. Firefighters had to cut a 30-year-old man out of the van and he was free by 8.50am. They worked alongside medics from the ambulance service and life-saving charity Magpas, who sedated him and gave him A&E-style care. The Magpas team accompanied the patient in an ambulance to Addenbrookes Hospital in Cambridge, where the man was said to be in a serious but stable condition. Three lanes of the carriageway were closed and police warned the lanes remained shut off, four hours after the crash.
