One Leisure Huntingdon opened its doors on Saturday, January 21 to celebrate the completion of the first phase of a major re-development.

The Impressions Fitness Suite has undergone a significant renovation that has almost doubled the size of the gym. It now sits across two floors and has been refitted with brand new cardio, strength, free weight and functional equipment.

This refurbishment is part of an investment in the centre that will also enhance and improve hospitality provision, as well as revamping Leo’s Funzone soft play facility.

Councillor Daryl Brown, portfolio holder for One Leisure said: “Huntingdonshire District Council has made a direct investment of almost £800,000 to Huntingdonshire and its community to improve the leisure facilities on offer, and is proud to introduce this new facility.

“Encouraging active and healthy lifestyles is at the heart of what we do at One Leisure. By providing a bigger and better space, with state of the art fitness equipment, more people within Huntingdon will be able to make use of the facility, which will have a positive impact on the community’s health and well-being.”

One Leisure members and Huntingdon residents were invited to view the new facilities during the open weekend.

Special guest Tom Fitzpatrick, the strength and conditioning coach for professional rugby league team Wigan Warriors, joined visitors to demonstrate new gym equipment, and run group training sessions using the new S-Drives and functional training rig.

Tom said: “I’m really impressed with the quality and variety of equipment that Huntingdonshire District Council has invested in. I’ve never seen a running track in a council gym before and I think you’ll struggle to find another local authority facility with this level of equipment.”

St Ives rugby league and union players also joined Tom for strength and conditioning training on Sunday morning.

Paul Ashbridge, who co-ordinated the workout, said: “The new kit is fantastic! With such a big space it’s great to get everyone together for a gym-based group training session.”

Guests were also invited to participate in series of gym-based fitness classes centred on the new functional training and cardio equipment.

Sam Swales, gym manager at One Leisure Huntingdon said: “These classes have been developed to enhance our gym users’ experiences and allow them to get the most out of their workout. All group training sessions last 30 minutes and are great for anyone looking for some guidance or to focus their fitness efforts.”

Anyone wanting to see the new gym facilities at One Leisure Huntingdon is welcome to visit. The redevelopment is due to be completed in April 2018.
