FIREFIGHTERS attended a large blaze at a landfill site in Godmanchester yesterday afternoon (April 23).

An area of grass 100m by 30m was alight as well as rubbish up to 2m underground when the two crews from Huntingdon station arrived at Sita Landfill in Cow Lane at 5.05pm.

The firefighters worked with the help of on site experts to dig away at the ground to get to the rubbish and extinguish the fire.

The crews returned to their stations by 7.15pm and one crew has regularly returned to the site and used thermal imaging cameras to check for hotspots.

It is not yet clear what caused the fire.
