LABOUR has announced its candidate for the Huntingdon constituency in the next General Election.

Dr Nik Johnson is a paediatrician at Hinchingbrooke Hospital and the Oaktree Centre on Oxmoor.

He replaces Anthea Cox, who stood in the 2011 General Elections, finishing third behind Liberal Democrat Martin Land and current Conservative MP Jonathan Djanogly.

Dr Johnson, who was selected by local Labour Party members at a meeting held in Huntingdon on Saturday, said: “It’s an honour to be selected by local members to be Labour’s General Election candidate for Huntingdon.

“People here are being let down by a Conservative-led Government that is failing to tackle rising prices and making working families pay more while millionaires are getting a tax cut. It is only Labour that will stand up for these communities.

“Conservative MPs voted for policies that are hitting people here hard and leaving local families worse off. It’s time for a ‘One Nation approach’.

“Labour would guarantee a job for anyone in Huntingdon who has been out of work for more than two years and open up the energy market, forcing energy companies to pass on savings to customers.

“I believe passionately in the idea of public service. I want to be at the heart of the local community standing up for Huntingdon, fighting the damage done by the Conservative-led Government.”
