JONATHAN Djanogoly MP wants as many of the 60,000 jobs created by the Olympics to come to Huntingdonshire as companies try to capitalise on the summer games.

After visiting Eaton Socon company Spearmark International, who will be producing a series of children’s Olympic-branded tableware, drinkware and lunchware, last week with Cabinet Minister Francis Maude, the Huntingdon MP is keen to look for other businesses to benefit from London 2012.

Mr Djanogly told The Hunts Post: I’m glad that the Government is prioritising the tourism industry as it plays such a vital part in our local economy. Nearly eight per cent of residents in Huntingdonshire are employed in this sector so it was good to have the opportunity to make their case directly to the Minister.

“The plans to capitalise on the Games next year should generate 60,000 jobs across the country. I want to make sure that as many of these as possible come to Huntingdonshire.

“There are already a whole host of events being planned across our area to celebrate both the Olympic Torch passing through and the Queen’s Diamond Jubilee and I have been in discussions with Councillor Jason Ablewhite, Executive Leader of Huntingdonshire District Council and council officers at HDC on how we can maximise the potential for local involvement in these momentous events.”

The Huntingdon MP asked the Minister for Tourism John Penrose MP to explain how recently introduced measures to boost hopsitality and tourism industries in the UK would affect the area.

Mr Penrose said: “From abolishing red tape through to skills training for hospitality workers the Government is determined to do what we can to help this incredibly important sector.

“And with London 2012, the Cultural Olympiad and Her Majesty’s Diamond Jubilee all happening this year we have a once in a lifetime opportunity that I hope tourism businesses and their staff across the country will make the most of.”
