Hundreds of jobs are at risk after Co-operative Food announced that it would be closing its Godmanchester depot.
The retailer confirmed to The Hunts Post that it ‘did not intend’ to renew the lease at its Cardinal Distribution Centre, in Cardinal Way, when it expired in August 2019, with 200 jobs subsequently placed at risk.
A spokesman for the Co-op said: “I can confirm that we do not intend to renew the lease at our Cardinal Distribution Centre when it expires in August 2019.
“We are exploring plans for a new distribution centre in the South East, and we will work closely with colleagues and the unions over the next two years to ensure continuity of roles at the new site wherever possible.”
Back in 2014, Co-operative Food closed its depot in Spittals Way, Huntingdon, with the loss of 123 jobs.
At the time, the company blamed “ongoing surplus capacity” for the decision and said that the move was part of a drive to reduce costs.
