A Huntingdonshire-based charity is set to pull out of running two community cafés in a bid to make sure it remains “financially sustainable” in future.
The Papworth Trust, which has its headquarters in Papworth Everard, has announced it will no longer be running the Courtyard and Cornerstone cafés, based in Papworth and Cambridge respectively.
It is understood that three jobs as well as a number of volunteer positions have been placed at risk of redundancy.
Helena Harris, director of operations at the charity, which provides support for the disabled, said: “Papworth Trust has taken the difficult decision to no longer run Cornerstone and Courtyard cafés. These difficult decisions have been necessary to ensure that the trust is financially sustainable and can focus on its core areas of accessible housing, disability employment, social care and day services, where we have the biggest positive impact for disabled people.
“The trust understands that this will be disappointing news for many people which is why we are in discussions with third parties who have expressed an interest in running services on these sites.”
The trust said it would be with-drawing from the cafés on April 28.
A café user, who asked to remain anonymous, told The Hunts Post: “It is just really sad that this seems to have come down to money again. Where are people who regularly use the cafes going to go?
“It is much better at the cafes than staying indoors and I think people will become isolated because they are community hubs, they are always full of people meeting up and chatting.”
