A team of “prisoners” will be spending the night in March Police station to raise money for a young mum who wants to spend as long as possible with her son after being diagnosed with a brain tumour.

The charity jail cell sleepover event will see 14 people locked up in a cell for 12 hours, including two teenager girls and a woman in her 70s.

The event is raising money for Amelia Martin, currently in Prague for six weeks receiving pioneering proton beam therapy, a type of targeted radiotherapy, not currently available in the UK.

Following four years of treatment at Addenbrooke’s, including two surgeries, she was given the devastating news at the end of last year that there is nothing more that can be done on the NHS .

It is hoped the proton beam therapy will give her more precious time to spend with her six year old son Dylan and husband Alex.

The event has been organised by March officer PC Andy Morris, who runs Fenland police cadets.

All the funds will add to a staggering £46,600 raised in the last three months to help pay for the treatment’s £52,500 price tag.

PC Morris said: “My sister is heavily involved so when I heard about Amelia’s story I wanted to help. The cells haven’t been used at March for four years so it is a perfect use of our luxury accommodation.

“They will all have ‘wanted’ signs on the door with some crimes created for them then they will get booked into their cells in pairs.

“Everyone is allowed one contraband item like a pillow or extra blanket, but other than that they are in there as any regular suspect would be.

“A basic cell, one blanket and a toilet in the corner.”

Carla Mayo, who lives next door to Amelia in Ramsey, and has helped organise the event, said: “Amelia has such strength. Her aim is to spend as much time as possible with her family.

“The community has been amazing so far in raising so much from cake sales and art work sales to fun days and a doggy stay and play day.”

• Taking part from across the Fens are Fiona Cameron, Alex Leach-Carter, Sandra Hodges, Scott Lambert, Tonya Wilson-Bett, Michelle Prior-Bett, Charlotte Masterson, Elizabeth George, Mark Boucher, Joanna Dickson, Jean Axelsen, Maisie Buckle and Holly Elkington

• Fenland Police Cadets meet on Wednesday from 5 to 7pm at the Rosmini Centre in Wisbech. It is for 13 to 18 year olds. PC Morris desperately needs more adult leaders so that they can recruit the number of young people who want to join. For details of how to get involved email andy.morris@cambs.pnn.police.uk. All leaders will be subject to a DBS check
