A man who stabbed his friend following an argument has been jailed for 12 years.

James Meenan, 32, attacked the 29-year-old victim with a glass, smashing it on his head, and then stabbed him with a kitchen knife.

The assault happened on the morning of January 25 in the kitchen of Meenan’s home in Cromwell Drive, Huntingdon, and had followed an argument about how the the victim was referred to by his son, ‘dad’ or by his first name.

With a wound to his face and a stab wound to his side, the victim fled to a friend’s house at nearby Christie Drive.

He was given first aid and then treated by paramedics. Police were called by the ambulance service.

Officers arrived at 8.30am and began an investigation while the victim was taken to Hinchingbrooke Hospital, in Huntingdon, with life-threatening injuries and then air-lifted to Addenbrooke’s Hospital, in Cambridge.

The victim is still recovering from his injuries.

Meenan, of Cromwell Drive, Huntingdon, gave no comment in police interview but later pleaded guilty to grievous bodily harm at court.

On Monday, Meenan was sentenced at Peterborough Crown Court. He was told he would also serve an additional three years on licence - until 2030 - because he was deemed to be a dangerous offender.

DC Jo Grant, who was one of the first officers at the scene, said: “This was a very serious assault that could easily have had tragic consequences.

“The victim has still not fully recovered but I hope this result will give him some comfort, knowing that justice has been done.”
