An investigation has been launched after two people died in a house fire in Somersham last night (Monday).

Fire and rescue crews and officers from Cambridgeshire police were called to Queens Road at about 8pm after reports that a house was ablaze.

A spokesman for Cambridgeshire Fire and Rescue Service said: "Crews from Huntingdon, Chatteris and Sutton attended. Firefighters arrived to find a house well alight.

"Wearing breathing apparatus they extinguished the fire using hose reels and jets."

Neighbouring houses were evacuated while firefighters tackled the blaze.

A spokesman for the police added that "two occupants of the house, a man and a woman, died at the scene".

The cause of the fire is yet to be established, but police say the incident is not being treated as suspicious.

The East of England Ambulance Service sent a rapid response vehicle, an ambulance, and its hazardous area response team to the incident.

A spokesman said that two people "both elderly" had died at the scene and added that another two people were taken to Hinchingbrooke Hospital, in Huntingdon, for treatment on "superficial burns".

The Magpas air ambulance also attended.
