AN INJURED swan which had become trapped in an icy river had to be rescued by firefighters on Christmas Day.

One crew from St Neots, and a crew and rescue vehicle from Huntingdon were called to a swan which was stuck in the ice at Riverside Park in Eaton Ford, St Neots.

Members of the public had dialled 999 after spotting the swan in difficulty in the icy water. It appeared that it had broken its leg and was stuck in the ice.

Fire control room operators warned the callers not to approach the swan or to venture on to the ice.

Firefighters arrived, put on dry suits and used an inflatable ice rescue path to reach the swan and release its leg.

The swan was left in the care of the RSPCA, and the fire crews returned to their stations by 3.20pm.
