HUNTINGDONSHIRE'S teenagers have been celebrating another good year of GCSE results.

One youngster with particular reason to celebrate was Kimbolton School's Alex Pollard, who achieved the top mark in the country for her English Literature paper - 200 marks out of 200.

Alex, 16, who recorded nine A* grades and a B grade, said: "I wasn't expecting to do anything like as well as that. I didn't believe it was real."

Overall at Kimbolton, 94.7 per cent of exam results taken were in the A*-C bracket.

Headmaster Jonathan Belbin said: "With almost a third of grades at A* level, we have blown away all previous records and all but a handful of students are returning to our sixth form."

At Longsands College in St Neots, 72 per cent of students gained five or more A*-C passes, with Jacob Saxon-Smith picking up 10 A* grades with two A grades.

Principal Robert Whatmough said: "We are very pleased by the range and depth of these results which reflect the College's determination to enable every student to make strong progress."

At Hinchingbrooke School in Huntingdon, 78 per cent of students gained five or more GCSEs at A*-C level - the school's best-ever performance.

Headteacher Keith Nancekivill said: "The changes we have put in place with becoming a sports college are beginning to reap rewards.

"There is a more focussed and disciplined ethos in the school and the students have responded positively to some very good teaching."

There were some excellent individual results, including twins, Adam and Michael Paton, who between them gained eight A* grades and 10 A grades.

At the St Ivo School, headteacher Howard Gilbert praised students for securing some of the school's best-ever results, with 70 per cent of pupils achieving five A*-C grades.

He said: "We are delighted with these results because they show our students have made great progress. These are some of the best results we have seen in terms of progress made by a year group"

High achievers included Nicole Scobell who obtained eight A* grades and Emily Moore, who gained five A* passes.

Significant improvements were also seen at St Peter's School in Huntingdon, where the A*-C pass rate jumped from 45 per cent to 55 per cent.

Headteacher Val Ford said the improvement was a 'triumph' for the school and was down to teamwork.

At St Neots Community College, 40 per cent of students achieved A*-C grades.
