Hundreds gathered in the Market Square in Huntingdon town centre to watch a spectacular display of Christmas lights illuminated on Sunday.

The square was filled with a host of fairground rides to entertain the crowds along with face painting, balloons from Dave the Balloon Man and stilt walkers.

There was plenty of delicacies on offer to add to the festive atmosphere including a stall selling traditional roasted chestnuts and the proceedings were given a North Pole feel with a snow machine.

The actual switch on was performed by mayor of Huntingdon Councillor Daryl Brown, and Father Christmas after working hard in his grotto where youngsters were given the opportunity to get their wish-lists in early.

As well as the festivities there was amazing laser light display which saw the crowds in awe and array of stalls by town organisations.

Hundreds also gathered in St Ives to welcome in the festive season, as the Christmas lights were switched on in the town.

The event, which took place in Market Hill, saw Councillor Debbie Townsend, mayor, and Councillor Philip Pope, deputy mayor, do the honours alongside Father Christmas himself.

St Nick was also joined by one of his trusty elves, before mingling among the crowds with a sack full of goodies.

As well as awing guests with twinkling lights, the evening, on November 20, also saw a giant Christmas tree take up residence in the street, Christmas carol performances, and funfair rides for youngsters.

One firm favourite was the teacups ride on the night, and there was plenty of food and drink on hand to keep the winter chill at bay.

Making to sure to welcome Christmas with a bang, the evening also held a spectacular fireworks display for guests to enjoy.

Councillor Debbie Townsend said: “It was fantastic to see so many people come out and support the Christmas light switch-on in St. Ives. A big thank you to all the volunteers, the Christmas Lights Committee and SITI for organising such a successful event, and to Westfield School for their beautiful singing and of course, Father Christmas.”
